I'll give the particulars first - I have three Golden Comet hens that I have had for about 6-7 weeks now. Their age is roughly around 26-27 weeks. They started laying about 3-4 weeks after I got them. I live in NC and we have had some SUPER hot weather this summer. That being said, I put two fans outside their run that blow inside the run constantly. I put frozen water bottles inside their waterer every few hours (as soon as one thaws out) and I give them frozen treats through the day (frozen veggies and fruit). And there is a super nice Coleman canopy that covers 90% of their run all day. They also have layer ration available to them continuosly in a feeder. Starting around Monday of this week only one hen has been laying and today no one has laid an egg. I have no idea what could be the problem. They all seem happy and not sluggish or acting sick - they're just not laying eggs. Is this normal and how long might it take before they start laying again? Just as an FYI - this week has not been nearly as hot as some weeks have been (hovering in the 80's-low 90's)...they were laying when it was 100 outside. I'm completely stumped and hope someone with experience can give me some advice or tell me this is normal and not to worry. This is my first time at chicken ownership.

Are you seeing more feathers around than usual? They could be going through a mini molt. You might also have a snake or something eating them. Mine slowed down with the heat. It takes a few days after the egg is first formed for it to get out. Maybe this is a response to the heat from a few days ago.

No ... not seeing any feathers around (maybe one or two here and there) and I doubt very seriously it is a snake. I live in a neighborhood, and their coop is inside a 10 x 10 run, which is also enclosed in a fenced yard and I have two dogs that go outside intermittently. Plus, I check on them so frequently, I would have caught a snake by now, I would think. I guess all I can really blame it on is the pretty incessant heat we have been having..maybe they're just tired of it and are on strike.

Patience, patience, patience....

Hi....we are in NC as well. On the border of TN and GA. Our flock has suddenly stopped laying. We talked with neighbors and they are all having the same problem. No eggs anywhere. no signs of predators, no signs of molt. Like you mentioned its not as hot as it has been. In fact its cooler to the point we've been able to turn the AC off. Have your birds started laying again?

Everything is back to normal here. It's like two of them just to a week long break from laying, but I heard from fellow chicken owners that does happen from time to time.
