My Golden Sex Link girls came from a lady who had ducks that she did not want to lay eggs. She knew the ducks would eat the hens' layer feed, so everyone got duck food. I got the girls when they were maybe 6 mos to a year old.

They seem to have been affected by the lack of calcium, and possibly other things, in their early diet. They will lay soft shelled eggs, sometimes no shell, unless I supplement calcium daily.

Problem is, they won't eat regular oyster shell. I guess they didn't get that, when young, so they don't understand that they need it? ??

I have been using finely crushed oyster shell made for parakeets. Expen$ive and not so easy to find. But it works, and their shells improve. I have to wet the food and mix it into the mash. Otherwise, they won't touch it! If I miss a day, they go back to thin or no shells. They are on MannaPro feed, the best I can find here in the city.

Has anyone heard of this? What suggestions do you have for another calcium source?

You can use human calcium pills, or you can put a Tums in their water. The latter is usually used onlu occasionally, as a boost. I don't know how to figure the dose, though. There are other products available. I got a lot of information by Googling "calcium supplement for chickens."

Tums! What a great idea! Looking also for a local source of ground limestone, not the powder.
