I have had a hen with some weird sounding congestion and almost gurgling sounds. It’s been about 2 weeks. Try some Vet RX. Now another one has started doing it. Fairly new chicken lady and have not experienced this. They otherwise seems healthy and still laying eggs. Any recommendations? Do I treat them with antibiotics? Thanks for any advice.

Can you get a video of what they sound like? Upload video to youtube and provide a link.

Take note if there's any sneezing, coughing, watery/bubbly eyes or mucous, these could indicate respiratory illness. Mycoplasma and Infectious Bronchitis are two of the more common illnesses. An antibiotic like Tylosin may help with symptoms if you are dealing with Mycoplasma.

Do make sure crops are emptying overnight. Check in the morning before they have had anything to eat/drink, the crop should be flat/empty, if not, then begin treating. Crop issues can sometimes make a bird gurgle if it's fluid filled.

Yes. I will try to upload one. Where do I get antibiotics without them seeing a vet?

I'd make sure her crop is emptying overnight. Do check her for lice/mites and make sure that ventilation is adequate as well.

If you have another that is starting to sound like that, then it may be a good idea to see if symptoms improve with antibiotics. You can order Tylosin online https://www.jedds.com/shop/tylan-soluble-100-g/

My hens finished 5 days of SMZ antibiotics. Still sounding a bit congested. How long till there should be improvement

SMZ-TMP or bactrim can be useful for treating coryza and a few other diseases, but Tylosin, tetracycline drugs, and a couple of others are more likely to treat mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG, CRD.) If your chickens have a virus, such as infectious bronchitis or others, they won’t respond to SMZ. IB virus lasts about a month and usually grown hens recover.

Do you think I should treat them with Tylosin?
