I have a hen. She is 2 years old, not sure of the breed. She has spurs. Or should I say it is either a spurred hen or a rooster who lays eggs.

Is she a freak or does this happen occasionally? I always wondered about her. She has the normal feathering of the females. She never crows. She never acts "roostery" and the roo does breed her.

I separated her from the flock and lo and behold....she lays white eggs.

I've heard of quite a few older hens growing spurs. I believe it may have something to do with hormone levels

She's had them all her life, but I'm happy to hear that other hens do grow them.

Yep, hens do grow spurs. Game-type hens, especially, but I've had a brown leghorn and a few easter eggers get some wicked looking spurs. That's why spurs (or lack thereof) aren't a reliable indicator of gender.
