My rooster perches by himself, he has a wee perch above his hens, and seems to like it there, as he goes back to it every night, doesn't try push his way into the girls.. I have noticed as well, he is the first one out in the mornings, and the last to bed. From what i have observed, he is taking his rooster duties seriously and making sure nothing gets near the coop and his girls without him spotting it.
It will take a few days for him to settle in, the the hens to get used to him. Mine was the same, girls weren't too sure of this big new stranger, and he roamed for a couple of days, but then they all settled after a few days, and now will snuggle up together in the afternoons for a nap and some mutual grooming.
