Herb Gardeners?

I love herbs and have been growing them for about the past 25 years. I go through phases of what I want to grow but my standards are thyme, rosemary, oregano, parsley, and basil [lot's of basil for pesto]. I grow those every year in pots on my deck. The basil and parsley - which likes a bit more water than the others - does well in the garden, too. I like having them on my deck as it's so close to the kitchen.

I used to grow quite a few mints and still do but I decided to put them at the edge of the yard where it meets the woods. The mints enjoy the afternoon shade and I love the smell when we mow it.

I "change-up" the other herbs I grow depending on what I plan to do that year. Some years I'll do pickles so will grow dill - which, for some reason, has a hard time starting in my area. Pineapple sage is a favorite as is purple basil. Purple basil is fun if you make flavored vinegars, it will turn the vinegar pink.

Have fun and enjoy! Nothing better than an afternoon of sitting on the deck, reading a book, and pinching and smelling everything you can reach.

I have been busy looking up what grows well in my area! I have 14 plants so far that I am thinking of growing, though I might narrow it down. (Or add more, LOL) I have also decided that I am going to grow them In pots.

Must haves: Lemon balm: I'm going to dry some and put it in the nest boxes this summer. If it doesn't keep the mites away, at least the mites, and eggs will smell good! Also, peppermint- a sprig goes in every glass of iced tea.

Both of those are on my list! I have 4 culinary herbs, 5 aromasomethinorother herbs and 4 medicinal herbs.

I'm a big fan of Lemon Verbena. Sometimes it's hard to find but oh-so-worth it. It's a woodier plant than lemon balm but can still be grown in a large pot. The smell and flavor is very lemon intense, much more so than lemon balm. Where lemon balm has a scent that reminds me of lemon pledge, the lemon verbena has a scent that is reminiscent of old-fashioned lemon drop candy.

I've ordered it in the past - can't remember from who - and it's definitely worth the effort if you're looking for lemon smell and flavor.
