I want sure where to post this, but I'm thinking about hanging planter boxes on the outside of my coop for growing herbs. I've been reading about the benefits of different herbs for chickens. So I want to try it out. I thought it would be practical and decorative! Has anyone done this? Any advice or general ideas? Thanks!

Good luck:) my chickens destroy every green thing in their coop. And I tried a cute little herb box attached to the window- and they perched on it, sratched it, pooped in it.
Herbs are great for chickens. So I grow them in my garden. And when I clean out the coop every sat, if I’m feeling generous that day, I cut some herbs (lavender, sage, chamomile, eucalyptus off my tree) and toss it into the nest boxes, the ground in the coop and whatever is left into the run.

Here are pictures of mine. Only one is on the inside of the run. The outside garden is still going strong even with them digging around in it when I let them out.

If you do hanging boxes, make them sturdy enough to support the dirt, water, and six chickens who will be standing in them destroying your plantings! Outside will be cute, but in the ground, and don't think they won't root around digging for bugs, and making dust bath areas where plants once were.

I think it’s a great idea , but as others have said the chickens will LOVE it too!!

So I added fresh mint into my window screens this year , my fly problem completely disappeared! Not a one even on fresh poop!! My windows are outside my run area I could add boxes ..... hmm another project :)
