On the flies...
Last year when I had goats I purchased a bottle of Shoo-Fly from Molly's http://www.fiascofarm.com/herbs/mollysherbals.php/products/shoo-fly-spray-mix I keep the bottle in the fridge and mix some into a sprayer and keep it around. You can take a look at the ingredients at the link.
Strangely, I don't have a fly problem but my "red" birds (RIR and Buckeye) seem to have flies follow them around and want to sit on their back, neck and head. Not sure why the reds and not other color birds. I have sprayed a little of this on one of the red girls earlier this season when they seemed to be annoying them.
