herbal medicine garden for chickens

Interesting...I may have to try this for flies and see if it works. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/08/got-flies-vanilla-scented-christmas.html

You can even make your own vanilla and soak cardboard and hang it up! 3 minced vanilla beans (grade B Don't spend more, amazon carries) in 1/2 high proof vodka/rum one half water about two cups. Shake daily and let sit for about a month. You will never run out cause you can just top it off with more alcohol. Use it in cooking. I leave a split single bean in my bottle.

Then if you really want to get creative, take the spent chopped beans and put them in half cup of say grapeseed oil, shake daily for about a month. Might work even better on the cardboard. Hmmm. I know I have some of that oil in my pantry somewhere :)

I did this because I could not find vanilla essential oil...and I like my collection of EOs.

Oh wow this is a great idea!! Thanks for sharing!! I love my Eo's!!

in fact, to deter flies, maybe we could come up with a mix of essential oils that would work on say cardboard to hang around the coop! Make it decorative! What would be on your list besides (or along with) vanilla?

Mints, right?
I was just reading a blog today and she used Lemongrass, citronella and lavender. Add to a spray bottle and spray the inside of the coop...when all the chickens are outside. I am going to try it. Also I heard that catnip, mint plants and lavender deter files.

Excellent and THANK you! Should we talk a little about tinctures?:)
