herbal medicine garden for chickens

That would be GREAT to have someone that's able to pull it!

Last year I was wondering what to do with it. You can't burn it. Compost? No. All I could think of was to dig a very deep hole and bury it so deep that it wouldn't be able to root and grow up through.

I actually ended up bagging it and having the trash guys haul it as yard waste.

Such a quandary.

I doubt there is not much we can do to get rid of it altogether but I'd like it clear around my comfrey Now I can even clip leaves because of it. Good idea to get rid of it in the trash if you buried it 10' deep it would probably still come back. It's like Kudzu

I just got some great ideas of things to add to my herb garden! I have chives, lavender, oregano, thyme and bee balm. I now want to add some age and add some mint to pots so it doesn't take over. I may try some chocolate mint in their run area and see if it lasts. Love this thread!

I can't remember if mine ate the nasturtium down to a nub I haven't bought any in a few years. It's so pretty though it's on my list this year. I'll put it in hanging basket and offer to them so I can control how much they eat. I have to do that with the grass we planted for the geese. My dh made raised beds up in their enclosure we put wire over top so the chickens couldn't scratch it up and then I had to put up plastic fencing and make a gate so I can control how often they can go in and eat it. Our soil is so rocky in the mountains we can't get grass to grow even if we didn't have chickens. I am not a grass fan anyway. What we won't do for our birds.

I love watching the chickens eat the seed heads from the dandelions before the blow away. So fun to see them get a dandelion beard!

I have thyme, oregano, bee balm, lemon balm, mountain mint, basil during summer. Going to extend the herb garden this year and add some more.

I also have a large pot with citronella right outside their barn door entrance to help deter flies. Did that last year and again this year. It doesn't survive over winter in my area.
I like this idea i am new to this, I was wondering what I could do about flies. Thanks for posting this.
