Ugh! We've suddenly entered mouseagedden! Huge infestation. My quail cage is in a garage like area of my house. I've read a bit of tips on here already and will pick up his food at night. I already have all food (people and animal) locked up tight when not in use. I've been using traps and scent based natural repellents around the house as well as storing extra bedding, clothes etc in storage tubs as opposed to just in the back of the closet. That seems to be working well, but now they decided to move into the quail's area. My question is, is it safe to use the herbal repellents near my quail? Will it harm him in any way? Thanks

P.S. I won't use poison anywhere ever. I don't want to take the risk to my dogs or even local wildlife.

You'd have to research the particular herb to find out about toxicity to quail.
IMO mechanical traps work best for mice...or bucket trap has worked, and not, for me.

I just read the FAQs on the website of the product I've been using and it says not to use around pet birds. I'm going to assume quail counts and not take the risk. Anyone know is pure peppermint oil would be safe to use around pets? What if I use the smell of a friend's cat? Think that would deter the rodents? I might look into other more effective traps, but I'd also they rather not come inside at all.

I am going with what Alaskan said about the sticky tape
pads they work great and shouldn't harm your Quail as
long as they stay in the cage but the part about an
infestation sounds real bad to he just for health reasons ...

Mice and Rats do NOT like mint.

I found a mint scented disinfectant and that works great at keeping the at bay.
I have also recently boiled up a heap of home grown mint and am spraying that about. I even spray in on the chickens to prevent lice and mites.

Now that sound's real helpful I think that is going to be useful

So how do you go about making this mint spray the "recipe"

Just mint in water boiled, that's all I did. I would also put some garlic in as well but I didn't have any available.
No measurements, just what you think.
I made it really strong so it would be more affective.

Thank you for the info I am going to put this in my book of home remedy's
and to be used this summer and the next thing to do is collect some wild
mint for future use ......
