Not sure what basil in water does, but I think basil is an antibacterial or antibiotic like oregano and obviously has benefits for chickens, so I would put it in water, but I prefer to chop it and other herbs up and mix it with the chicken food, and if it is dried the chickens will be less likely to pick it out. Raw apple cider vinegar in water is extremely good for immune systems and cures lots of problems, so I put it in my chicken's water and drink it too, mostly in smoothies. I heard it helps prevent cancer as well

I had some sick chicks, likely IB. They had free choice dill, basil, thyme and parsley for two full weeks. Also put out some chopped garlic free choice a few times.

Backed that up with 30 drops GSE in their gallon of water every day for the same two weeks. 6/7 made it.

I keep a wide range of herbs out in the garden for them to have as they please. Echinacea, dill, parsley, rosemary, nettles, calendula, thyme, marjoram. Would love to grow some ginger too.

My chickens hate rosemary, and refuse to eat it, though they should. They love to pick apart lavender and step on the poor plant, as well as shred echinacea.

Mine aren't fond of eating it either. I hung some with lavender in the coop to dry then mixed into the litter. Helps some with insects and smells great in there.

Echinacea they can only pick at thru chicken wire for the time being. Otherwise it would be toast

haha I hear you! Today I caught a hen snipping away at an ornamental lily. I like mint and lavender in the nest box, and diatomaceous earth sprinkled in the coop bedding to kill mites and flies that lay their eggs in the poopy bedding.

I haven't tried mint, that's a good idea.

I am still on the fence about DE. I have some, but iffy about using it.

It kills any exoskeleton so like mites don't stand a chance. But, I have heard it can mess up chicken's respitory tracts....

I hear fennel is supposed to be really good for chickens reproduction and eggs. I planted some this year and I'm gonna try it and see for myself. I'm sure they will like it and we will see if it makes a difference in egg production etc.
