Herding dogs

I'm getting a Australian Sheperd pup soon and I own ducks and chickens and I want to know how to train him. My nebior has cows(45 head+ 45 calves) and when I get my puppy trained I'm gunna ask him if I could help him round up the calfs he's weaning. It's going to be 6monrhs to a year until I get him but I'd like to start training my lab/heeler mix as well. Any web sites, tips, videos anything will be helpful. Thanks.

Australian Shepherd Club of America. http://www.asca.org not the AKC club, this is the original Aussie club. Also go to the Aussie Health and Genetics site for tons of useful info BEFORE you get your pup. http://www.ashgi.org/index.htm

AKC also has herding titles- but most people that do AKC also do other organizations. There are several styles of herding, some trainers will do more than one style and some won't. German Shepherd style aka C course or living fence probably won't work for Aussie or Cattle Dog. There are some Aussies that can do Border Collie style but it can be frustrating for the owner to train as Aussies don't use eye like a BC. LOL- Nothing else uses eye like a BC.

Good luck- there is nothing like when the genetic hardwiring clicks in and the dog has it's Ah Hah moment ;-)
