Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I have a question regarding leghorns and their flighty nature. In the future I plan to run a farm with a free range poultry operation. I plan to raise both meat chickens as well as egg producers. Leghorns are without a doubt one of the most prolific egg layers but they are also known for their flighty nature. I am wondering whether this would make it a pain for me to herd the hens back to their pens at the end of each day?

For those wondering about the number of leghorns I plan to raise, it would be around 25-30 hens

Mine put themselves to bed about 15 min before dark, i have 5 white leghorns in my group of 30 birds. No problems and sometimes they are the first ones to go in the house.

Thats good to know. So I would have to keep their pen as well as forage area all within the same fenced area. I was originally planning to follow mxed grazing, that is to have my chickens graze in the same area as the sheep and cattle. But for the leghorns that probably wouldnt be practical.

I would try it out, mine run the yard and woods outside of the chicken run when i let them all out with the rest of the gang, 5 dogs and a cat and still make it back in well. They are a bit more cautious or flighty as far as trying to lay hands on them, but when they are roosting i try to do so anyway.. Good Luck.

for mine a have a black australrop with so when its time for bed i just kinda chase them then they would run to there coop to go to sleep
