Hello! My name is Rinda.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Our family has had chickens for about 6 years or so. Maybe a little longer. Started out with 12. All our chickens have been free range so we've lost several over the years. Thankfully no coop invasions! Then got conned into 20 "or so" rescue chickens. Turned out there was 40!! They had a barn and a decent size run but were shocked and fascinated when they found out they food can be foraged for! They thought they we're dying of starvation for like week and adjusted five after that
So we loved them and sent most on their way to other loving homes. I thrilled this lady who was actually one of our local Jehovah's witnesses took some. Long story there lol. BUT, she adored them and was so thrilled to not pay for the dozen she ended up with.
Now, we have 8 chickens left, a rooster we were gifted with (no idea what he is) and we are starting again with a new set of 8 chicks. The feed store said they were Amercaunas. Found out that wasn't true. I Will be thrilled if they lay colored eggs of any kind! Right now we kept a blue egg layer (not she which one she actually is either!) from the rescue chickens. Which inspired my looking for the fake Amercaunas.
Either way we love our menagerie of chickens. They are endlessly fascinating.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
7 laying hens, 1 rooster and 8 fake Amercaunas lol
(3) What breeds do you have?
I know we have red comets and that's about it!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Entertainment and fresh eggs
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, energy new age stuff lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a nurse by trade but haven't worked in a long time. We have 8 kids and a lot of fun and laughed in our house.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
always found links to here in my Google searches and having new chicks made me want to jump in here and check out the fun!
