Hi all. Thought I'd introduce myself. My husband and I bought a good piece of property last Summer and suddenly decided we had plenty of room for a small farm. Getting plants started wasn't hard. I'm a pretty experienced gardener. Chickens are the first animals and that is brand new to us. Both of my Grandparents raised plenty of farm animals so I have been around them. I have helped and I have learned, but I have never done it on my own.

We finished building our coop and six Leghorns are waiting to go in. They're four weeks old and not full feathered yet, so I don't think they can go in yet. Research on that is divided. I thought it best to be on the safe side.

You can be more optimistic than that

Backyard chickens is here!! Chicks can usually go out once they are fully feathered out - unless your weather is very cold. I know a lot of folks seem to 'dump" them out earlier because they don't like them in the house but, I believe in erring on the side of caution.

The Learning Center can answer most questions. The coop section is a good read and I like to recommend "Raising Backyard chickens," forum.

If you put your state name in the search box, it will come up. You may find other Bycers living near you. Also check out the predator threads..

Fortunately, I do have one Grandparent still with us who has good advice. They had a very large farm at one point. Five hundred and some acres with a whole slew of livestock. As she said once "We never had heat lamps and all this stuff and our animals were all healthy and happy. You'll be fine."
