Hi everyone. PNW girl here that is head over heals for her chickens. Like stupid head over heals, I had no idea I'd find this type of love and joy with these little dinosaurs. Almost a year ago I had a family reunion where my dad insisted we needed to rebuild the broken down chicken coop on my property and get us some chickens. It was all hands on deck and everyone pitched in for a week long hard job of rebuilding the coop and run. And I couldn't be more proud of what we accomplished. Bonus, everyone got to name their own chicken when we finished. (they were maybe a few weeks old at that point).

We now have 8 girls, started with 11 but had a little heartbreak along the way. Nothing we could have changed and obviously a longer story than needed here. But happy to report I have 2 Brahmas (Muffin Pants, Lady Cluckinton); 3 Orpingtons (Nani, Pip and Walter White); and 3 Plymouth Rocks (Roxanne, Mabel and Mutha'Clucka) Reminder: Family members named all chicks.

What i didn't anticipate was the bond I would get with these girls. The way they follow me wherever I go, jump into my lap purring. I work from home and have found myself having what I joke to my co-workers as 'cigarette breaks' AKA: chicken therapy. I go every day, mid day and send them on chicken field trip. They love the outings but my soul feels so much more whole afterwards. I've also incorporated 'chicken happy hour' in our neighborhood where a few animal loving neighbors join with a glass of wine while walking the pasture with the chickens. Win Win for everyone. Following the outline here: (other hobbies beyond chickens): Gardening Gardening and Gardening. I'm happiest when there's dirt under my nails. Also a huge backpacker, runner and dog mama. For work - Graphic Designer in advertising.
So how did I find BYC: Google searching for answers. Owning chickens has been a never ending quest for information: what treats can they have, why does this egg look funny, is this chicken a rooster? blah blah blah. I went deep into Reddit forums but found myself constantly coming back to BYC.. I'm liking the dedication and knowlege this forum has. clap clap clap to BYC and the community.

One caveat, though ... your chickens are likely to sleep in the nests since it looks like they are at the same height as the roosts? (I might be wrong!) If they do, you will end up with poopy eggs. You might raise the roosts to prevent that, if you can, as chickens prefer to sleep as high as possible.

Also ... what is that in the corner of the top bar on the top rack of nests? Just under the red bars? On my phone, it looks like a little white mouse face. Surely not? 🤔

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Beautiful flock and coop! Thanks for sharing! One question though: Are you growing greens for the chickens in your coop? That's cool if you do. I grow hard red winter wheat from time to time, but in my kitchen.

This is the best!! "I've also incorporated 'chicken happy hour' in our neighborhood where a few animal loving neighbors join with a glass of wine while walking the pasture with the chickens."

I love it!

1. Your dad is clearly a wise man.
2. He has a smart, talented daughter.
3. The renovated coop is AMAZING!
4. Letting everyone name chickens can produce some interesting results.
5. Your chickens are lovely!
6. This is an incredible community of folks who know a lot and are always willing to share. Welcome to our flock; it's good to meet you!

(Edit was to change numbers in the list. Accidentally numbered two items the same. Once again, my math skills failed me 😢)
