Here we go again, worried about my silkies!

Cockerels? My broody hen grabbed one of them by the top knot the other day and slung it around.
I have the crate. Now I have to wonder if I love them enough to get up early to release them from their prison.

....sorry..... but that exactly described how I think of so many I see here on BYC!

I don't have silkies (and never plan to get any) but I can see why someone would be worried about them, since I don't see how those "feathers" can possibly keep them warm like regular chicken feathers. I'm even keeping my frizzled Cochin inside longer, even though s/he's no longer ill, because I don't think those feathers would work as well as regular feathers.

Today I brought in a very bullied and battered SF cockerel and put it with Fritzie. They squared off a couple of times, eye to eye, and Fritzie did jump down off the brooder roost onto him, once, but there's been no other squabbling or fighting. Fritzie is now munching down on feed right next to the un-named, SF and they were both kicking pine shavings around together a few minutes ago.

The SF has had its head picked bald and there are some wounds near its neck. It was also VERY thirsty and hungry. I know that breed can be easily bullied, so I've been trying to keep several feeders and waterers out and around for everybody. This little one has been following me around and coming to stand right next to my feet every time I stop. I saw it was losing head feathers yesterday and today it is bald with the boo-boos on its neck. 39 degrees outside - which is cold for HERE - and I just realized it really needed rescuing. Fritzie now has company.

But I will defer to the wiser members who have already posted reassurances about your silkies being warm enough.

You know I've read that about SFs too, but I guess my three SF pullets didn't get the memo. Keith has a name for them and it's not something that can be repeated on a family-friendly forum. My broody is a SF and she's the one that beat the snot out of my silkie yesterday. She was mean before she went broody, now she's a terror. Even makes the rooster back down.

so omaybe your SF needs quarters by herself? i have a BO that is a brat... especially at nite- have threatened to put her in jail if she doesn't mellow out!

Well the broody has a large crate in the coop all to herself, but I force her off the nest once a day to eat and drink and poop. She has food and water right in front of her, but I think it's good for her to get off the nest for a short while. It's when she's out for that 15 minutes or so that she's attacks anyone and everyone.

Don't worry they'll be fine we have two of them with maybe 10 or less other chickens and they do fine! BTW the house is super cold, even with four little piglets with them it is SUPER cold.

I know what you mean! Thats is one of the reasons why i dont have silkies anymore..

I was always sooo worried about them in the winter.
Just pile up the shavings and hay for them... its about all you can do...
