Here we go, starting to release my turkeys to yard

If not in the pen, id bet they are roosted in your tree

When I got my four turkeys, I planned to put them in the barn and pasture with the sheep, llama and two emus. They instantly let me know that they wanted no part of it and headed to the poultry side of the yard so they could be the big fish in a small pond. My wing trimming accomplished nothing. I conceded. The poultry side, with its trees, grass, and all kinds of things to sit on, like patio furniture, is much more appealing to them. Fortunately mine came from a petting farm where they were contained in rather small quarters, so they're quite docile and follow me around.

While some turkeys probably are dumb as a post, they can still manage to outwit us sometimes or tell us how it's gonna be. Here are my girls letting me know that they're coming home with me, not getting sent to some ol' pre-Thanksgiving auction:

Good luck with yours. Your grass looks so nice and thick and your birds in all their variety are beautiful. And it was nice to show my boyfriend that not everyone is a "crazy bird lady."

my wife thinks I'm crazy. I am wanting to raise some bird for meat and rather than go the brooder route I wanted to have hens raise them. This group hopefully will raise the meat birds. I do so love to go out and check out what they are doing. Ihave one hen that loves me so. My wife laughs like crazy at me cause as soon as I stop she squats for me.

The day started beautifully with warm sunshine and a light breeze. Let all the turkeys and chickens out to play. Fed everyone and laughed at some of the antics. Sassy the chicken made the mistake a few days ago of challenging Hanna the turkey hen. Hanna promptly showed her who the real boss was. This morning the first thing Hanna did was locate Sassy and remind her that she was the new yard boss and chased her from one end of the yard to the other. This is not a fluke, she did the same thing yesterday. I was able to catch and give Tommie her shot this morning, she is doing so much better. I went back out about an hour before I had to leave for work to find Stan ( the tom turkey) in the street calling to his ladies. The dumb bird was either calling them to come out or he was trying to get back in. I ended up chasing him back in the yard after about 20 minutes. Spent another 40 minutes trying to get the turkeys back in the pen. The only one I could get back in was my little Hanna. I left the pen door open and went to work figuring they would all be gone by the time I got home.

So Nikki gets home about 8pm to find Stan in the tree above the chicken coop with two other hens. Tommie wascontentendly laying with the chickens, and my little Hanna was still in the pen. In the time it took Nikki to inspect the chickens Stan got upset and went to another tree and took up residence about 30' up. I got home a little after 10pm. I reached up and grabbed one hen out of the tree by the tail feathers and put her in the pen. I came back and got a pitch fork and used it to push another hen out of the tree. She flew to the ground where I promptly grabbed her and deposited her in the pen. Went to chicken coop, picked up Tommie and Nikki gave her a shot of antibiotics and listened to her breathing. She is much better now, a few more shots and she will be all fixed up. Stan is staying in the tree tonight, I hope it rains like hell. He doesnt know it yet but if I catch Stan he is going to freezer camp. I have a new tom that will be joining the crew. Good night all, much love from the farm.
