Hello All,
I've been wanting to do this for a few years now. So I found this great site on a Google search and here I am!
Background; Born, raised and still live in Northern RI. I am a Residential Construction project manager and a trained cabinet maker.
I have been married to my most lovely wife for 27+ years, we have 2 great daughters ages 17 & 14. We have 2 indoor cats.
We live in a circa 1830's Mill House that has been in my wife's family for near 100 years; our daughters are the 4th generation to live in this house.
Being an old house in an even older, quaint village, the home is set close to the street on a nice 1/2 acre lot bordered by woods at the back. This leaves a great space to setup a coop for 5 girls whose primary function would be egg production and I am sure amusement as well as the bonus free manure!
I have a green thumb and love gardening. I make a mean "Green Tea" with dehydrated, store bought, chicken manure, which the veggies and flowers seem to enjoy greatly!
We eat a lot of eggs in this house! 2 Dozen a week on avg. The ladies bake a lot and eggs are are a go to meal quite often. I just think this is a great way to provide fresh, healthier, reliable eggs for us.
My main problem is that the ladies in our home think raising chickens will make me/us appear as "Hillbillies"...Oh well.
We have a fantastic 22' x 17' x 1-1/2 story, circa 1850 corn crib (hence my username) on the property already, so this could only add to the ambiance around here!
I know squat about raising chickens, but I do know a few folks in the area that raise them. I hope to learn much from you all on this site.
So here we go! This should be interesting!
