Hey guys, I guess I am resurrecting this thread;

I was wondering if my heritage Sweetgrass males will be ready for Thanksgiving if they are coming at the end of this month (April)?

That'd be, what, 6 - 7 months old?

Thx!

Howdy guys!

I've had Blue Slates for about two months now, give or take, and already threw some eggs in the bator! - I do have a question for some of you Blue Slate owners... Why is it that none of my blues are paying any attention to the black throw off? Should I cull her? She's not getting paid any attention, not even by the tom, but possibly because she's not quite laying yet. Tom is showing full intrest to the blue ladies.

ya they should be decent size by then... when we had turkeys we butchered some around 6 months old...

agree and agree! Hi everybody!
I have a tom with my hens, but not the right breed. Would still like to get a Beltsville, so keep me in mind!
Thanks

Just an update. Our Narragansett hen is laying, but no activity from the Greg Oakes (Canada) male yet. To be honest I have wondered if he is a he. Before the hen arrived it was strutting some. Have not seen any strutting or heard a gobble. It was hatched late and was young when we acquired it at Crossroads. Have set two eggs to see if they are fertile.

Elias is correct (again!) They should be large enough to eat. However, if they are not, just save them for Christmas!

If you see no activity between the Black hen and your Slate tom, seperate them into their own pen. You can move the tom to the Slate pen a few days and then back with the Black hen a few days. Your tom will eventually start mating her on these "visits". You may also consider AI. Here is a video on AI for chickens...

Jen, still been keeping an eye out for a tom for you. Don't forget to stop by one day and check out my turkey coop and the turkeys.
