During our last snowstorm, the neighbor down the road came by. He and his wife were walking out to survey the damage and see if the county road had been plowed (ours is a private dirt road). My hubby was out front as they walked by, and then came back in the house to tell me we had four more hens coming when the weather got better. The neighbor had told him he was thinning his flock and asked if we wanted them, so hubby told him we'd take them.
Forward to today -
We were standing out on the front porch telling my mom and brother goodbye, when the same neighbor stopped and asked if we'd like to get the chickens today. He was on his way out, but said he'd be back around 2:00 PM and asked hubby if he'd come down to help catch the chickens to bring them home. Hubby and my son were gone about 10 minutes, and came back with a crate, which I assumed had the four hens in it - WRONG! The neighbor had decided to get rid of ALL of his chickens, so we now have an additional 8 hens and a rooster! The rooster looks like a WLH cross and the hens are 6 RSL, an RIR (or NHR) and an EE. Hubby and son spent the rest of the afternoon putting a chain link pen together to temporarily house the new flock until we can come up with better accommodations (now there's a rush to get at least one of the hoop coops built!). So now that I'll potentially have 18 eggs a day, what the heck am I going to do with all of them?!?
He's not pinning this one on ME; he's the one that said "YES!"
