Hi all!

Looking forward to getting more information raising some hens. My wife and I have been interested for a while as our neighbour had chickens before moving away.

So being totally new to this, hoping to build an open style coop to accommodate max. 6 hens to start. We live in Ontario, and the winter can get cold.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome all!

I am unable to advise you on how to construct a coop in Ontario. I can think @aart would be a very good person to emulate for coop design. Welcome to BYC and I hope you find the answers you are looking for here with us.

Appreciate the pointer, will see if I can connect with aart or find his posts.

How many chicks, how much space do you have and do you have a specific breed ib mind
Hoping to start off with about 6 since that is the minimum in terms of pullets that we can get from local hatcheries I've seen so far. I'm going to inquire with them about breeds since they might have pointers on what is good for handling winter/eggs. Being friendly with kids is a bonus. Gladly take recommendations. Oh, and we are just under half acre.

Yes! These are what i'm looking for, but a bit big... maybe I can look into miniaturization for my (one day) smaller flock. I need to see if there are plans out there, and how they handle winter.
