(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have dreamed of having my own chickens for over fifteen years. I've always been OBSESSED. My friends and family think I'm nuts, just ask em
I find a way to fit chickens in every conversation. I moved to a more country setting last year after being stuck in an awful, disgusting crime filled city most of my life. And in mid April I bought my first 6 chicks! Then April 14th another 20 something chicks. And two days later another 12. All different breeds. And then last week 8 more!! Those ones all lavender orpington.
I now have a mixed group of giant breed, standard breed and bantam 7, 8 and 9 week olds in my big brooder and a group of two week old LOs in my little brooder.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
46! I was originally planning to start with 6. Chicken math.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have:
4 speckled Sussex
8 buff orpington
3 black jersey giants
4 black australorp
1 unknown (possibly EE, brown leghorn or welsummer)
4 Easter eggers
3 light Brahmas
3 little unknown bantams
3 possible d'uccles (1 porcelain 2 mille fleur)
1 sebright
3 barred rocks
2 silkies
And 8 lavender orpingtons
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, as they're all still babies. My favorite part has been watching them grow and develope their unique personalities. And the chick snuggles!!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I spend the warmer months fishing, camping, hiking and whatever other outdoor activities I can come up with. I love sitting in my back yard by the fire with a couple drinks here and there and I love working on my yard. My last few weeks have been spent building my giant chicken coop with my boyfriend and getting the run ready for my babies.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a leather tech by day, I fix airplane seat covers. And 3-4 nights a week I am a CNA in a nursing home. I live in a nice fairly quiet area (compared to what I'm used to) around upstate NY near the great sacandaga lake (not near the city) with my boyfriend, three children, two dogs, five cats and 46 chicks!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I am constantly googling things about my chicks. I worry worry worry about everything! This is the most common resource site to pop up!
