There's nothing quite like watching a mum hatch and rear chicks.

Too true, in fact here's a few pictures...
We ended up cracking the last three eggs, one had not developed right and two were developed but dead, possibly to weak to get out. Oh well, 5/8 is good for a first-timer!

I try to limit the broody hens here to 6 eggs. I've found over the years that 6 or less preferably gives the chicks better survival chances. Silly things like mum trying to get 10 or 12 chicks under her wings make a difference as does trying to feed more than 6.
The chickens here free range and apart from having food and water provided, take care of their own young.
