. My family and I just recenty got some chickens we have 3 so far 2 roo's (an Americana and a Cochrane) and one hen (Australorp) when we got the Cochrane we were told he was a she nope as soon as we got home he crowed. I found this site by chance through google. I have done some reading and loved ot so why not join right lol. I have had manu questions some have been answered just by reading but I have so many more. Can't wait to jump in.

X2 on having too many roosters. The proper ratio of rooster to hen is 1 to 10. So you will want to add more hens to your flock to protect the hens from being harmed or even killed.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X4 on too many roosters. The 10 to 1 ratio is very important as too many roosters will be very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially even seriously injuring them. Maybe you can get some more Australorp hens to go with the one you have. Australorps are a terrific breed; extremely hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while my Australorps have never reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I've still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year.
