Hey, Anyone from North Dakota? Even though I doubt it.

Hi! glad I found this thread, I'm from the minot/surrey area and come spring, will be getting come chicks! Any tips for a newbie whos never even set foot on a farm? I've been doing research everyday but its hard to find tips for those of us in ND with windy subzeros and humid hundreds..Any advice? What breeds have you found work best? I hate the thought of my chickens being couped up all winter long..

I have a new BYC neighbor, whoo-hooo!!! I'm in the Norwich area, 6 miles east of Surrey. We also have LivinNewDreamInND in the Deering area. I'm the one who mentioned BYC when you posted about the fb page. I just honestly don't have time to keep up with fb much.

My chickens actually have outside access 24/7 all year. They have a covered run to keep predators out. If you stick with breeds that have smaller combs, you'll have less problems with frostbite. That seems to be more of a rooster thing for some reason... my leghorn hens have larger combs but don't have problems, maybe because they don't stick up straight? I don't heat the coop at all, to me it isn't worth the risk of fire. As long as they can get out of the wind, all of my birds do fine. Chickens, geese, turkeys, peafowl... I lost a few guineas to cold weather when they were roosting in the trees, after I put them in with the chickens and they roosted inside they did fine.

Congratulations and good luck!

lol, i already have a ton of coturnix quail right now. I raise and sell them, but really i just sell their eggs on ebay. Everything I have is in my signature and on my website, also in my signature ;)
EDIT: if you go on my website to the pricing and ordering page and scroll to the bottom, I currently have some silkies for sale in all ages. :) we also sell their eggs on ebay, but you can do private orders through the website.

I was wondering if any of you were at all adverse to mine and my sister's plan to one day buy North Dakota and turn it into the worlds biggest poultry farm. Ya know, one county for ducks, one for bantam chickens, one for egg layers... This won't happen until my sister and I are multi-billionaires, of course. :p You can just be citizens of the country of Chickenlandia. :weee  How's that sound?

Hi ND ChickenKeepers! I'm glad to have found you. We live very close to downtown Fargo and just purchased 6 chicks that are ready to be moved outside into a coop that we haven't built yet because the snow refuses to melt! I am sure we will have lots of questions as we continue, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the others who are brave enough to venture into the Fargo Backyard ChickenKeeping club!

Had to come over and say hi since I see an active ND thread!

Hatching is in full swing here! frosty, nice to see you here too. I am off to look up that animal auction you told me about. I think it is tomorrow and I never put it in my calendar.

Trying to remember which auction I told you about... watch bisman.com, most auctions are listed there. There is one coming up on May 11th in Rugby. I wish I could go, but I have to work

If you look on bisman, go to 'Equipment and Ag', and under there go to 'Other Livestock'. Whichever auction you go to, have fun for me!

Hey everyone! I have been reading all sorts of information on this site for months and finally joined in the fun! I have six chickens and an almost finished coop. I live in the tiny town McHenry, ND.
Wondering about the winters, would a heat lamp in the coop disrupt their roosting at night?
