Hey Everyone

I am new to Backyard Chickens. I run a wild bird rescue near Manchester and my first chicken was a baby silkie cockerel that I called Dixie. He was brought up with a pigeon and they were the best of friends. As Dixie got older and developed his crow I got him a girlfriend so he wouldn't be lonely, then more chickens and now I have around fourteen.

As a rescue we get chickens in. I've had Baldy Bum who is a rescue and doesn't have many feathers. I have Tina and Bitsie who are Polish and were raised as show chickens but when they had neurological issues they weren't wanted. I also have Bluebell a speckeldy who came to live with me after a dog killed her friend.

I have read a lot of books on chickens but am really new so just looking for somewhere to read, ask questions and meet other chicken loving people. x

Glad to have you. I've raised several silkies. A few had a vitamin e deficiency which is a gene some of them have. Their neck turns completely around and they are looking straight up. I bought the eggs from a neighbor. Their is a treatment if it's caught eariy. It's vitamin e with selenium. You mix it with drinking water. It works well. Also you usually need to hand feed them until they can eat by themselves. My kids think It's funny because I won't sell these Silkies or hatch their eggs. They will be with me until they die. (DO A SEARCH ON BYC FOR CROOKED NECK SYNDROME AND YOU CAN GET THE FORMULA FOR TREATMENT) you can find just about anything you need on this site and meet some fine people. Again welcome.
