Really don't know what "too many" would be, either! We look @ the catalog and would like to try just about everyone of the layers! We have one 'older' Rhode Island who is Queen of the coop, run, barnyard, etc. She is about 5 years old and was rescued from the slaughter house this Fall by laying an egg after she was culled into the slaughter coop with the meat roosters! We all decided that all of the girls who were older should be allowed to continue to live out their lives after being such good egg producers. Not only that, they have such great personalities. For example, this Summer, Little Red was out in the large run with the rest of the girls and "The KIng of the Roost." He is a beautiful bird who takes great care of his harem. On this particular day, he had found some choice vegetables parings just put into the run. He called the rest of the older girls. They all came running as did Little Red. When LR tried to pick up a particular morsel, King pecked her and scolded. LR dropped her morsel, stretched up to look King directly in the eye and sharply pecked his head - not once, but twice!! One could almost hear; "Oh! So sorry! Didn't mean to offend you! It will not happen again!" - as he retreated with drooping head and tail. Such an interaction! Wish we had thought to bring out a camera that day.
Enjoy your chickens - see that you also note their personalities.

Hello! Such a beautiful girl you have in that picture! We need to post some of ours! We have about 40 girls and two roosters, along with geese, three turkeys and one Appleyard drake. Most of the birds belong to our grandson who would be happy if he could just farm poultry and do cabinetry and nothing else.
