Hey from New Mexico

One of the interesting conversations I had with the Hatchery (not Privett) was that they don't have a higher loss of babies this time of year vs. any other time of year. I find that hard to believe, but there you go.

Oh, I believe a hatchery would tell you that.

If you are on BYC long enough, I think you will see a pattern of higher losses for people who order when the weather is still relatively cold in their area.

Unfortunately I didn't pay as much attention as I should have when my Dad was raising chickens so I don't know his success rate with shipping but it seemed he did well with them. I like the hatching your own idea....it's part of what having chickens morphs into. I found a place locally that sells day olds....they are twice the price of the shipped chicks but I believe it insures I'll at least start with all live chicks and no DOA's from shipping. I didn't think the cold would be an issue if they go into a brooder when they arrive....provided they arrive alive. Then again, I am new to this.

I agree. Also, having read of others losses over the holiday weekend (which was when I had a full shipment of DOA) I wonder why the hatcheries do it. I have begged for a faster shipping option, but no.

I'm sorry, if I said NM it was my fat fingers....I meant to say NH, as in New Hampshire
