I've been here since the spring, lurking and reading. I'm not new to chickens, but it's been about 20 years since I've had them. Purchased chicks in the spring, built a coop and a run, found so much useful info on this forum. All the articles and tips helped me to build a coop (well hubby helped too :D) that I'm really happy with, not much I that I wish I'd done differently, with the exception of making it bigger.

One piece of advice I didn't take seriously was chicken math. It's a real phenomenon, and I got hit with it bad. Initially I just wanted a few layers, maybe 6-7 since it's just hubby and myself. Bought at RK, next I read about all the screw ups with pullets, roosters and wrong breed. I'd initially purchased 6 Barred Rock pullets and ended up with 2 cuckoo marans, a pullet and a roo. Didn't notice the feathered legs until about a week in. The wrong breed mix up convinced me that I needed 9 more to offset the possibility of a bunch of roos. Turns out all are pullets with the exception of the 1 roo, one died and I sold 3 others, brought me down to 11. Then decided I needed some colorful chickens and eggs, that turned into 15 chicks, repurposed a horse stall to accommodate these. Currently I'm having lumber delivered to start on a second coop, bigger this time and will have 24 eggs soon to go in my new incubator. Not sure how many chickens I'm up to, I've decided it's best not to count. :lau

So far I've been able to find all the info I needed via search. I thought it was time I introduced myself so people would know who I am if I had to post an actual question.

Looking forward to get to know the folks here.

Makes me giggle! My husband asked me the other day, "how many chickens are in the basement?" I proceeded with, "not sure honey... Are you sure, you want to know? I'll go count them!" 🤷‍♀️😂😂 I have 6 adult standards, 6 silkie, 9 bantam, and like 15 young standard chicks. I may be missing some. That just off the top my head. He has officially given up on keeping track of my flock. Now I've suckered him into building me a new 8x12 coop, that will be connected to our fenced yard.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

Loved your intro, I'm glad you're studying up on your chicken math skills. But you're still at the elementary level. Keep at it and you'll be a graduate soon enough :gig

I completely understand this. When I added NINE chicks to the initial batch, I just put them in the brooder without mentioning anything to hubby. He likes to look at the chicks, so he peeks in a lot, I figured he'd notice fairly quickly, it took him about 3 days to notice :lau, not sure if was because they were all the same breed or what.

When he finally asked me, "are there more chicks in there?" I replied real casual like, " I dunno, maybe we have a real case of spontaneous generation."

TY for the welcome. :)

I'm almost afraid to think about what that might look like. 4 or 5 indivdual coops or one giant monster coop 😂. Also I'm planning on breeding with the hatching eggs I'm getting, assuming they hatch and I get some pullets and roos, so I've got to have some breeding pens too 🤣
