Hey Gang! Whatcha think of my plans and Rooster issue?

That is annoying isn't it? I hate when feed store do that, here your all pumped up ready for your chickies NOW and then you find out you can't get them for another week! Maybe you could purchase from a private breeder? They are a lot of times more reliable then feed stores, and they have better quality birds. All the chicks @ feed stores (I'm sure you probably already know this) come from hatcheries, the "puppy mill" of the chicken world. They don't breed for breed standards, show qualities or performance. Maybe look on craigslist and see if there are any breeders near you?

I'm sorry for Andrew. :(

I am sorry that happened to ya'll !! I haven't ever tried to integrate chicks. I bought mine through the mail. Maybe next time try mail ordering. It worked out REALLY well for me. I have 3 different breeds all the same age. You do have to do some digging to find a breeder that offers the breeds you are looking for....And there may something you wanted that you can't get. I started with finding the Araucana breeder as the Araucanas were a MUST have for me! She also sold Orpingtons and BLR Wyandottes so I got some of each.

Try Craigslist, go back a week or so. You may be able to find someone who is selling a few extra birds that aren't 3 days old. That is what I did, cause I wasn't ready to deal with a heat lamp, etc....

From now on this is how I will buy them ... I am new to all of this and if I knew then what I know now I would have contacted a breeder. I talked to one today and she said she knows tons of people and she can get me any chick I wanted .... but I dont want to wait a month at this point. Andrew is so bummed ...

Now that I have a base, I think I will just go with a local breeder. I am going to pick up some Australorp, Golden Laced Wyandotte, and Buff Orpington pullets next Friday and that will be it for this year .... just really disappointed about the Light Brahmas ... I am gonna try and talk him into taking on the GLWs as "his"

I checked earlier .... there are a few that I called, but no luck

From what I know of Wyandottes they are supposed to be pretty friendly. Probably would be a good breed for a child! They are also REALLY pretty and VERY cute chicks! As soon as you hand the chicks to Andrew he will fall in love with them! Is it possible he could go to the store and pick out the ones he wants? Or do they just have a box with your chicks already to go? I think alot of people favor a local breeder. Which is good.....makes me think about breeding some chicks and selling them. There are not really an assortment of chicks available in my area.

Good Luck to you!
