I have never seperated my bantys from my LF... especially if they are brooded with LF.... I dont think you would have a problem.... SOOOO just expand the run LOL

Well I think that will happen next year anyway as the wife is loving them too

The idea of the ornamental breeds is for her to see as she works the business ... my birds in the back will be more for egg production and meat ( I plan on getting a few dozen Cornish X eventually

I have only one regret ... that I didn't get into chickens sooner

LOL yeah we went from 5 chickens to 45 now this spring LOL hoping to get a few more Roos and some meat birds this summer... I am going to get some freedom rangers instead of Cornishs... Just because they handle free ranging much better =] and my chickens free range 100%

I LOVE it! Gorgeous birds! Your coop turned out really great! My husband hasn't come around about the chickens as much as I had hoped...so count your blessings your wife has embraced it! I am still having a blast and they make me very happy. I love watching them and seeing them grow! IT IS SO MUCH FUN! My 11 year old son has really taken to the chicken raising so I am glad he and I have something to do together. I also wish I had not waited so long!

So this afternoon the weather was poopy and my brother said he had alot of extra plywood laying around so I asked if he wanted to help me make my nest boxes ... he was glad to help, of course

I had the plans in my head and pit them on paper and we went about cutting out the pieces and dry fitting them ...

And nailed most of it together ....

We also have the top slanted piece nailed on but I forgot to take the.pic ... had to cut it short due to family obligation .... but just have to put the front piece on to hold in the bedding and the rails for.them to hop up on to get in ....

I LOVE it!!!! I was trying to think what I should paint on the slope for a sign .. that is in the lead!

Looks like I will be needing to expand my nest boxes, have 4, and there is always a line or someone fussin because they have to GO!

Have you planned ahead when one of your hens goes broody, do you have a separate area set aside for her?

Just remember when the summer heat hit, start freezing water bottles (1 gal) the night before, and in the morning set them in a container of water. I use a plastic oil change pan, big enough to hold the frozen water bottle, and enough room for the chickens to get a nice cool drink. I also drilled 4 tiny holes on the sides 1/2 from the bottom of the gray plastic container, put the frozen bottle inside, and poured cool water to the top, then put on the lid. The water trickles out the hole & into the oil pan. We had 110 deg or higher last summer in Texas. I was misting them down with water 3 - 4 times a day. Chickens also like frozen watermelon.

Mom, I figure I have a little time for a hen to go broody, but rest assured you will see me posting questions about it! I have no clue what is involved with a broody hen .... I do have quite a bit of space for whatever is needed ... so please feel free to give any advice you have! That's what I love about this site! As far as the summer temps ... we hardly ever see a day hit 90 ... but I love the.ice idea! Keep them coming!

Hey Tony, been looking for your updates. It is fun to watch the pecking order & to see who will become the leader of the feathered group.
It has been fun watching my Broody Hens & their new babies. The first set is already a week and a half old, Mama is very protective. 2nd Mama is still sitting on eggs, and afraid it I take her out of lock down, she may abandon the remaining eggs.

When do your new chicks arrive?
