I just wanted to point out Nature's Hatchery. It has many breeds. I want you to rate it for me. I don't seem to recognize where i found it but I couldn't find it with out typing in its full name in Google. Enjoy

Yeah, I found it searching for a hatchery that was closer to home than Ideal's. It seems to have quite a large variety. Thanks for looking into it

. It is definetley not advertized like Ideal's or McMurray's either.

I think they're another drop-shipper, rather than an actual hatchery. They don't mention actually hatching the birds anywhere on their site.

whats a dropshipper

I got a shipment of chicks from them 3 weeks ago and all but one, which arrived with splayed legs, is doing fine. The splayed leg chick died but that is a common situation. I got them through a banner ad on this forum.

I live within driving distance of them but they don't want anyone to come over for a pickup. They do list an actual address and I looked at it on Google Earth. There does appear to be a facility of some sort with a couple of outbuildings one of which appeared to have runs in back . They are on a farmette nestled in a suburban area so it is possible they are raising birds there but probably not all the varieties or in the quantities they advertise.

I was unable to find any options on their website to have the chicks vaccinated. When I inquired about that by email I did not get a response, so I have placed my next order through McMurray until I find out what they are doing in that regard, as I have an older bird now (not from them) that may or may not have Marek's. I did manage to talk to a live person on the phone at one point at Nature's about the splayed leg problem and he gave me instructions on what to do but I did not have the Marek's concern at that point so didn't ask about it.

I would be interested to find out about the drop ship situation as one reason I ordered through them was that I figured the birds would not have to travel as far to get to me.

Drop shipping is simply buying from a hatchery and reselling. I don't know anything about how the actual shipping is handled, if the chicks go to the retailer or directly from the actual hatchery.

If they have a few runs then they are probably hatching some of what they sell so can legitimately call themselves a hatchery.

No way would I buy from a business which who would not let me pick up. I don't expect to be able to inspect the facilities, I really do understand biosecurity; but why not be able to just go to the site and avoid shipping stress.

I have not bookmarked this site.

One reason people won't allow pickups is legal business reasons. In many places it is illegal to officially run a business out of your home that people come to without special permits and such. I wouldn't discount them purely because of that. As you mentioned biosecurity is another reason. Its possible that they had a bad experience in the past and don't want it repeated. There may well be other reasons to avoid them....but I personally wouldn't avoid simply for the fact that they don't allow pickups
