Hey Northerners: What is the absolute coldest air temps your chickens have experienced happily!

I have the blue heated bowl also. This is my 5th winter with it plugged in for the dog. I use a heated waterer for the chickens that I purchased from Premier 1. I am on my 3rd winter with that.

I have my fingers crossed, it looks like maybe a couple of my ladies have started to lay again. I got back from town and found these.

I’m keeping the ladies in fresh water (sometimes twice a day because of freezing temps.) 18% protein feed and an infra-red light. We have been in the teens and up to almost 30 today. So whatever I’m doing it must be ok.

I went outside at 5am this morning to fill up the wood stove before work and thought boy it feels a lot warmer this morning so I looked at the thermometer and it was a balmy 3F. The past few mornings have been-11F to -20F. I put down 2 more bales of straw under the coop. I have a raised 8'x16' coop with plastic around it to keep out the wind and snow. I had to belly crawl and throw straw at the same time to spread it around. My DH told me if I get stuck under there he was not helping me LOL But the chickens like the extra straw and that's where they hang out during the day so it was worth it.

*Jealous!* I haven't seen a fresh egg in a week! I have a dozen and a half in my fridge for eating. Bought some from the grocery store for baking. I had forgotten how sickly pale those yolks are!

I wonder why I am having such a problem with the blue bowls? I promise you I am not throwing them around or anything. It is as if the heating element just quits working. When I turn them over, I don't see anything obviously wrong on the bottom.

Do all of yours have a solid bottom, or can you see the black plastic thingy with the heating coil? just curious. I get mine from Fleet Farm.

I have used heated buckets for my horses in the past, and yes, I have had some of them go bad unexpectedly and without mistreatment, so I believe you. I don't use them any longer because of that.

I really like that Premier 1 Supply company. I bought a quality lambing heat lamp --for these frigid days --this fall from them and I love it and it feels safe to me--solid, secure. Anyways they have some nice stuff including adorable Vintage Egg cartons.

I would say they are notable for quality supplies.

-35 tonight. This will be the lowest. I did cut some insulation panels yesterday out of foam board and then covered with press board and paneling for the North and West sides of my uninsulated (now half insulated) coop put them between the 2 x 4 framework of the coop. This weather is crazy cold. It was -14 this morning. Coop was -5.

I posted earlier about my submersible aquarium heater, and it seems to be working, even though the chickens unplugged it once. I so far recommend it. They can have nice warm water to heat up the insides of them and I don't have to carry over water every day or try and use a heat lamp. :)
