My boyfriend and I just got our dream farm and are moving in at the end of the month. My boyfriend had chickens when he was in his late teens, and my dad used to keep all kinds of poultry as a hobby in our backyard when I was very little. I remember going out with my dad every morning and gathering up the eggs.

We currently have 3 horses and can't wait to have chickens! I ordered some Americana and Silver-Laced Wyandotte chicks from McMurray hatchery and scheduled to arrive first week of October. We will be keeping them in the house for the first couple months to grow, but I'm concerned about transferring them outside because by December it will be colder. Anyone have any tips on this? Thanx much and this is a great site!

I got my 25 babies this past March. I had them set up in my garage until they were nearly 3 months old. I wanted them to be fully feathered and I was kinda to attached to them to put them outside in their new coop, even though they were 3 months old I still utilized a heat lamp and had to put them on a timer when it warmed up because they wouldn't go into the coop on their own.

from WI. I would keep them inside for the first 2 -3 months, then depending on where you live, the type of coop you have and the type of chickens you have you may want to have a heatlamp fo a little while. There are some informative threads in "Flock Management" about chickens and cold weather you may want to check out...
