I am really looking forward to being in a group like this! If I had known about this sooner, I might have been able to save myself tons of hours searching for information and also the constant trial and error that comes from trusting searches!
I am not new to having chickens, I have had them for about 5 years now. It started off with just someone else's chickens they did not want any more. Now I have a flock of 16 hens and one rooster. I still have three old girls that are living the golden life of retirement since they are not good producers anymore. In the spring whoever is left out of these three will go to my aunt's house because they are "Just Chickens". I do not know what breed they are, I got them out of the easter surprise group at Cal Ranch 4 years ago. I have since then made the decision to only get barred rock chickens and that is what all the other hens and the one rooster are. I chose that breed because I raise chickens to take out to our ranch and it is HOT HOT HOT out there. The barred rocks seem to do great out there, another sad trial and error from listening to internet searches.
I love my girls, and my Floof (that is my rooster). My whole family laughs at me because I can't go outside without talking to them and they talk back to me all the time. I can't help it; I have raised every one of them from hatchlings and I am pretty attached! Floof is a funny story I feel like sharing with you all. I made the decision this year to get a rooster because I would like to try hatching my own eggs next spring, I decided this because getting a dozen barred rock chicks in my area is extremely difficult and if you do find them you have to be the first in line when the truck shows up and be ready to throw elbows! That is not what I want to do every year just to get chickens to take out to the ranch! So I started looking for a rooster... I found them online and could have them shipped (that didn't sound like a good option to me) but there was no one locally that I could buy from. So three raisers in the area have my phone number and were going to call me if they ever got a barred rock rooster. Meanwhile the dozen chicks I bought this year are getting bigger and bigger, but one was bigger than the rest. Then it was lighter in color than the rest, then its wattle and comb was redder than the rest, then I realized I was searching for a rooster when I already got one by accident out of the "sexed" hens bin at Cal Ranch. Since then he has gotten very big and has very beautiful flowing feathers. Those feathers always seem to be blowing in the wind, that is how he got his name.
I am a part time rancher, part time student, part time care giver, and my favorite two parts, a full-time mom, and full-time wife. I am extremely busy every day regardless of if I am at the homestead, or at the ranch. We have dogs, cows, and horses on top of the chickens, so I guess the homestead is a mini farm.
I found your site by doing a Bing search for an ink that will stay on eggshells! I have not found the answer yet because I got distracted by joining this group. So any answers to that question will be greatly appreciated! I truly look forward to the newsletters and seeing talk about what to do with and for our butt nugget manufacturers.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Congratulations on your accidental Floof! I love my boys too. I have several 5 and 4 year old gals that are still laying for me but like you, they are here 'til the end as they will continue to live their ideal chicken lives at my home.
