I am relatively new to chickens - definitely a newb. I have 3 roosters. I had a hen, but sadly she passed due to gape worms. I do have her chicks ( I chose to hatch all she gave me ), which number over 12. All beautiful silkies.

I also have an Easter Egger that bonded to me instantly, and I to her. She is my house chicken.

My husband, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 5 Turtles, 5 fish, all my chickens, and I live in Blounts Creek, North Carolina. Hubs is in the military, so we move. A LOT. I decided it was time to finally realize my dream of owning chickens.

But that’s my crazy story. I spend so much time on here from Google searches, I figured it was time to make an account.

So.... Howdy!

Glad you're here Jacquin! We're a military family as well, who have FINALLY settled down into our own home, so started chicken-ing! No more moves... and, if DH has to PCS somewhere... well, chickens take precedence and canNOT move... :gig

If you haven't yet, please make your poultry a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise.
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, please get your chickens some Vaseline or bag balm to stave off frostbite before they get it! Baby, it's cold outside! :D

Hubs hasn’t retired yet - it’ll be a while yet. But I believe we’ll be putting roots down here.

The roosters, whom are in the coop, have essentially a chicken heating pad. One that is self regulated. Waterers have heaters ( and pumps ) in them, and along with the water, food inside and out. I built the coop myself ( yes, I’m a girl ), so it has a door for opening and closing with a little gap that allows some air in. The access door at the back also has a little gap, allowing for air flow - turned out handy during the summer.

First aid kid includes VetRx, Vetricin (sp?), flour and styptic pencil, and even vitamins. All of the chicks are inside.

If there is anything else I need to add to the coop or kit, please let me know!!
