As stated, I live in Austin. It is an incredibly chicken-friendly town. I have not made the plunge before now because the logistics of chickens and dogs sharing the same space seemed too difficult. However, my plans for a new vegetable garden made chickens a good idea for organic bug control and fertilizer with a little planning to protect the shoots and fruits.

My renewed desire for chickens happens to coincide with home renovation projects. My hope is that I can construct a high-end and aesthetically appealing coop from upcycling the roofing tile, siding, and windows that are being replaced.

As bug control is my primary objective, ornamental bantams seemed ideal. The smaller size would allow me to keep a slightly larger flock in the allotted space...and I am a sucker for "cute". I briefly considered doing a smorgasbord of breeds/colors. However, I think it would be better to just pick one to avoid the need for compartmentalization should I want offspring.

I am still in the conception stage of my coop and not ready for eggs/chicks yet...but want to do all my research. My chosen breed is the Belgian Bearded D'Uccle. As "pretty" is of high priority to me, I was going to try to get some show stock. To that end, I am hoping to attend a couple of poultry shows. Any leads on who has gorgeous Mille Fleur or truly innovative coop features would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.
