I just joined and live in East Tennessee.
Not totally unfamiliar with chickens but first time I've raised my own.
Have six leghorns at about six weeks old. Just moved them to the coop yesterday. Ordered six guineas too.
I raise a big garden every year and last year the squash bugs took over. Don't use poison so it's either share with the bugs or share with the chickens. Think I made the right choice. I live a little back in the sticks so there are plenty of ticks and mosquitos around (the reason for the guineas).
And bring on the fresh, home grown eggs!
Great to be on here!

I've had the same problem with squash bugs before too. Couple years ago I expanded my Chicken Run up to my garden which shares a fence. You can't let the adult chickens it without them tearing up the garden plants. However, serendipitously, I had left the bottom foot of fencing with the 1"X2" mesh. The mother hen with chicks had the chicks entering the garden; they didn't tear up the garden plants, but did wipe out all the bugs they could find including the squash bugs. It was kind of funny seeing the MotherHen clucking to get her babies back thru the fence while they had no intention of coming back until they got the last bug they could see.
I do have a chicken door in the Run/Garden fence and let the flock in after I'm done with the garden in the fall, they spend all winter gleaning and tilling up my garden adding fertilizer. It really makes it easy to plant in the spring with minimum preparation. Wish I had thought of that a couple decades ago!
