Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself! I'm Lori, my husband Jason is lurking around here somewhere (whitlockj85) too. We got 6 chicks 2 weeks ago today (cross bred between Americaunas, Aracaunas, Buff Orpingtons, RI Reds, and White Plymouth Rock. Oh and a Dominique that we suspect might be a rooster, sadly s/he's our favorite but we live in a pretty suburban setting). They're different ages, our youngest are about 2 1/2 weeks and the oldest are 5 1/2 weeks old. We also accidentally picked up a 3 day old Silkie chick today.
All of the pictures of our first 6 are a couple of weeks old. The ones of Marshmallow are from today. They're all still in our brooder (a huge Rubbermaid tote) in the garage at night right now and the oldest 6 have been out in a temporary run in our fenced yard during the day for the past few days:
We wanted chicks for eggs, and just because they're fun. We also have 4 rescue dogs (Aggie the Boxer, Tucker the German Shepherd Mix, Chico the Chihuahua, & Kiwi the Chihuahua) and a little 19 month old toddler tornado named Parker. We picked up the supplies to build our coop this weekend and hopefully we will be able to get it done within the next week or two.
Like I mentioned, we live in a pretty suburban setting in Texas. We have a 1/3 of an acre in a 7 year old neighborhood. We know our neighbors on either side, and they're totally fine with us having hens but if they're roosters, we might have an issue. They were straight run so there's a good chance we'll have to get rid of at least one. And, like I mentioned, our Dominique Major Poppycock (a family favorite) is showing signs of being a rooster
. Cross your fingers for us!
I think that's it. Just, hey y'all!
