My fiance surprised me with 2 RIR chicks a few weeks ago and every time I've "googled" something chicken related BYC was always popping up! So here I am! :) This is the first time I've had my own chickens and I love my man so much for thinking of me when he saw them! I'm ready to bombard yall with my chicken questions and I'm excited to know I can get answers from the Chicken Pros! Thanks, everyone, for being so helpful and sharing your smarts with us newbies! :)

Thank you! I see that feather sexing is a popular topic, I was wondering what to look for in RIRs specifically. Hubby was in a hurry at the hay exchange, where the chicks came from, and didn't know to ask if the trough full of chicks was a straight run or pullets etc. So I can only hope I have 2 little girls, but the lighter colored and smaler one is rather...ballsy I guess you could say

Thank you! I'm still learning how to use this site and can't seem to upload pics into a thread from my phone. I have uploaded pics to my gallery just can't seem to get them here. I am wanting to learn how to sex my RIR chicks, I believe they may be about 6-8 weeks old but I am no expert. My opinions on the sex of each chick is based on their character and what I have already learned from this site. Could really use some input. I'm not sure if my pics are open to everyone but if they are could someone please take a look at them? Hubby and I are both new to raising chickens and our guesses are getting us no where
 
Hello from SC and Welcome to BYC!

Just joined yesterday myself and got my first chicks a couple of months ago. (My hubby grew up on a family farm). One of the breeds we have is RIR. They were sweet chicks and then went thru a skittish stage. I got worried that maybe they were going to stay that way. However, it was just a stage. I have no idea if chickens do that or certain breeds or if that was just ours. Now at 2 1/2 months they are SO sweet - our elementary age daughter can even walk up to a RIR rooster and pet him or pick him up! They are a fun breed!

At a small livestock auction someone told us that if you hold them in your hand on their back that the hens (pullets) will lay there after a second and let you rub their tummies and the roosters (cockerels) will constantly try to turn over. I have NO IDEA if this is true or if it's an old wives tale, but our daughter has had fun "testing" some of the chicks to see which ones like to be petted. LOL

Your guy sounds very smart! We've been married 32 years and wish we hadn't waited SO long to get chickens! Y'all are starting off right!!!
