Hey guys, I own eleven laying hens: six Isa Browns, two Buff Orpingtons, a White Rock, two Rhode Island Reds. Four 3 month old Harco's. And six three week olds, 2 black sex-link Harco's, 2 Plymouth Rocks, a Leghorn and a Columbian Rock. The older hens are taken care of by my mother, & I am raising and taking care of the 3 week olds. The babies are my pride and joys! I call them my children, & they have the best life going, haha! All of our adult chickens are 100% free range, except when its bedtime they all go into one of our two coops, or our horse barn. The babies are kept in a confined area under a heat lamp for now. They are about 90% adult feathers, so in about a week they'll go the day without the light.
As you can see from my rant, I adore my chicks and chickens. I have to be the only 19 yr old around obsessed with her chickens! They are not just an animal to us, they are our pets! When they stop laying, we do not kill them, they are kept with us until they pass from old age, sickness, or other natural causes. We try to give them names, but most look alike, so it doesn't work, lol!
I hope you all have good information for me! I look forward to reading all your insights, and helping me make the "kids" lives as best, and healthy as they can be!
