(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am new to chickens but I've been wanting them since probably 2015. We just didn't have a good location for them until recently. I've spent the last 10 years researching best practices for predator proofing! I got my first flock started in early April.

(2+3) How many chickens do you have right now? I have 3 Easter eggers (almost 3 wks), 3 sapphire gems (almost 3 wks), 5 cornish× (2 wks.) and I'm incubating 12 eggs - 6 lavender orpingtons and 6 bcm.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I honestly love all birds but my husband is not an indoor bird guy. So far our babies have developed such fun and loving personalities and I love watching them interact with each other. I also like that we get to have a great relationship with them and get eggs ethically sourced.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I really enjoy reading and writing, I hope to some day be published! I also like cooking and baking from scratch. I've recently started to learn to sew and hand embroidery.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have a husband and 2 kiddos (4, 9mo), 2 cats, and 2 dogs, and I'm always trying to convince my husband we should have a mini farm. In December of 2024 we finished building on 9.5 acres in a rural area of western NY and we plan to make the most of the land we have to be more self sustainable and employ ethical/eco friendly practices.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D lots and lots of googling lead me here and the wonderful answers made me stay :)

Congratulations on getting and enjoying your first flock! And on researching ways to reduce predation:clap

Best wishes with creating a self-sustaining and eco-friendly environment, and a big welcome to BYC! I hope you stick around to both learn a lot and share the knowledge you're acquiring.

BTW, I didn't have any problem reading your pink font. In fact, I kind of liked it. I have such limited technology skills that I wouldn't even know HOW to make my words a different color. 🙂
