Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie to these parts.
We bought 15 chicks from My Pet Chicken in April. We're down to 12 due to 2 dying within a week of arrival, and 1 dying by a terrible accident.
We have 3 Red Stars, 1 Rhode Island Red, 3 Barred Rock, 3 Black Australorps, and 2 Buff Orpingtons.
My hubby has been around chickens in his youth, but I have never. It's so much fun! So far we're getting about 3 eggs a day. We've only been getting eggs for a few weeks.
I have a question. Our chickens free-roam when we're home. They wandered too far Sunday. A neighbor saw a dog attack one of the Buffs. We saw feathers everywhere, but couldn't find the chicken. Lo and behold, she reappeared Tuesday morning with no tail.
We put her in the coop, but my son said the other chickens had her cornered. Last night we decided to put her in a dog crate, so the other girls won't pick on her. Is this the right thing to do? Should we isolate her or are we making the situation worse for her. Will the others gang up on her?
Your opinions are greatly appreciated!!
I'm attaching a pic of our coop! I'm proud of my hubby. It's an 8' x 8' x 8' coop.
