Hi, Glad I found this site. I joined to get information on raising chickens. I have never kept chickens or lived in the country, going to be many new life experiences. I have many questions but my guess is I better ask more experienced keepers what the first step is? I will not be at property until the selling of my house, which could be soon or some time, hoping for soon. Anyway, I live in Mississippi and will be after I move. Don't think I should have problems with cold, but heat on the other hand, that's going to be a concern. I want to build the coup in the shade on the weekends until I get moved. any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks

https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/coops.12/ Keep predators in mind when building your coop and make sure nothing can dig in/under the coop of run too.

Welcome from a neighboring state. Since you are waiting any way, inform your self on houseing and what types of flock you may be interested in, also might want to check chicken laws in the new area. And start investing in first aid kit for what ever farm animals you will be keeping as well as protection from predators you may have to deal with and protect flock from. Good luck

Also check out the predator threads for ways you can brief up safety & security from predators. A top on your run will keep out attacks from climbers, jumpers (coming down from trees) and aerial raptors.

It you use a solid top it can help protect from rain, snow, hail and also provide shade.
