As you may have guessed, I'm new to the forum. We have 3 Barnevelders currently, that we love. We've had them about 4 months and they've only just started laying in the last 2 weeks. Their eggs are brown and mid-sized, and delicious to eat. The chooks are really friendly and talkative, and they seem to love our company. Our little girl (she's 9) loves to pick them up and give them a cuddle, and I have to admit that I like it too.
We've had chooks before, as well as ducks. We had 3 bantam hens, 3 Rhode Island crosses, and 4 large black hens (I don't recall the breed). We also had a rooster that was so aggressive we gave it away and then a second rooster that bravely took on a fox with predictable results. And we had a pair of dark Indian runner ducks that had a clutch of ducklings. We kept all of them that survived, and one of them is still alive at my parents-in-law's place.
While I enjoyed having the chooks the last time, this time I'm finding that it is much more fun. Possibly because we've got a smaller yard and we're closer to them, but I think also because of the breed. I'm enjoying the company of these 3 much more. So much that I think we'll get another 3 so that we can go self sufficient for eggs.
We're in Bowral in NSW, on the eastern side of Australia.
