(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We had chickens when I was a kid and now I want a flock of my own. I LOVE fresh eggs and I want to get my young granddaughters involved in raising and caring for them. We recently moved from a house with a very small yard to 3 1/2 acres and I'm so excited that I can have chickens now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I don't have my chickens yet. At this point I'm doing my research. I need advice on which breeds will do well in the Texas heat (I'm in Tomball, Texas, just NW of Houston). It's very hot and humid in the Summer, but the Winters are mild. I also need to know which breeds will be good with my 3 yo and 7 yo granddaughters.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Please see my answer to question #2.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Online research

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

My husband and I love to travel, scuba dive, horseback riding, and are very involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. As much as we love to travel, we love being at home and hanging out with our kids, grandkids, and dogs.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have two grown sons, two granddaughters, 4 dogs and 2 horses.

I have Dominiques, Black Australorps, Easter Eggers ..they all do fine in the heat.
All hens are pretty nice..it's the roosters that get mean.

Welcome!!!! My kids loooove our Cochins and silkies! We are in the midwest and it gets incredibly hot in the summer and they do fine :) we've also got some red and black sexlinks which are very friendly and hardy :D

:welcome

There are lots of folks who pop in from Texas so I'm sure you'll get suggestions soon. I personally prefer heritage breeds that are threatened or critically endangered even though breeders are hard to find. Welcome to BYC :frow and thanks for joining us.:ya

@KikisGirls you need to teach me how to do what you just did.
