Hi everyone!
I'm Erin and I've had a few chickens for about 3 years. I've frequented byc all the while. I had an account previously but can't figure out where it went... Lol

I wanted to get back into the community that has helped me enjoy my chicken keeping adventure, so here I am. I recently had to put down my first girl and it was incredibly traumatic for me because I had to do it myself. Thankfully, I had help from my father and the knowledge that it was the kindest thing I could do for my sweet little red hen.

I need some help with a brand new chicken I adopted recently, so I'll be starting a new thread about it shortly.

So glad to be back 😊

Sorry you had to let go of your girl. :hugs I have not yet been able to do it myself and have called on my friendly neighbors to do the deed the two times it was required here. So I envy your ability to do what's unfortunately necessary.

Oh I am sorry you had to put a hen down. :hugs It's never easy to do, especially when it's your first sick bird. But it's usually the right thing to do if they are suffering.

Well, you know the ropes, make yourself at home here and good luck with your new chicken! :-)

I am glad you’ve decided to rejoin us!
It’s very true that putting a sick or injured bird down is difficult. I was raised thinking food just appeared in the store. My thinking has changed little by little over the last ten years.
I hope you re-establish yourself in our flock, and we see you around for years to come!

The girl I put down was a production red ☹ She was the first girl I bought, but I had a runaway come to me from a neighbor's house that got kicked out of her flock for getting injured. The runaway is an amber star, or something similar, and wouldn't leave so I bought her a little house and got her a friend. I'll never get another production red though, for sure. The man that sold her to me was selling crates full of poorly bred birds with cross beaks and health issues, but I didn't know anything about chickens then. My little PR was the best layer I had, laid until she got sick, and was sick for the last 6 months. She was a great chicken.

I also have a little barred rock hen I bought from an Amish family and two light red hens who also ran away from the neighbor's house about a year after the first...and boy was that girl mad about it, too!

The newest one is a 10-week old something-or-other I adopted from my son's 4th-grade class. I'll be posting about that one... Lol sorry, I'm so long-winded.
