I have 16, week and a half chicks, and they are acting ready to perch. What size dowel and for far from the litter should it be? And is this advisable?

I just made a little perch out of 2x2s that was about a foot off the ground. So a 2x2 is a 1.5" actual lumber that you can buy at your home improvement stores.

Welcome. I have a combination of 2x2's and 2x3's. I want the chickens to be able to keep their feet warm in the winter by laying on them.
